On Longevity, Expertise, and the Limits of Accumulated Knowledge

It is often asked why an Elf of nine hundred years is not, by simple accumulation, wiser than every Human scholar alive. The question is usually posed by Humans; Elves rarely seem troubled by it. The underlying assumption is that knowledge accumulates in the mind as money accumulates in a bank: one adds a little each year, loses none, and eventually becomes impossibly rich. If this were how cognition worked, an elderly Elf ought indeed to be terrifying. By his ninth century he should speak twenty languages, master half a dozen professions, remember every book he has ever read, play three instruments flawlessly, understand advanced mathematics, and still have time to become intolerably good at chess. This does not occur.

The chief reason is disappointingly simple: memory is not storage. All of the Principal Races forget. The rates differ somewhat, as do the kinds of information best retained, but there is no race known to possess anything resembling unlimited autobiographical or technical memory. Skills decay when unused, and names vanish. A language goes rusty without practice, and facts once recalled instantly come to require prompting. An Elf who studied geometry three centuries ago and has not touched it since may remember the principles, some terminology, and several irritatingly specific anecdotes about his instructor while being unable to solve a moderately difficult proof without review. This surprises Humans because three centuries feels to them like history. To an Elf, it may simply be something he used to know.

The same applies to skill. Expert performance does not improve indefinitely with time. Practice produces rapid gains, then slower gains, then refinement, and eventually something resembling a ceiling determined by ability, physiology, method, and the difficulty of the task itself. After that point, another century may preserve mastery, deepen judgement, or improve subtle aspects of technique, but it does not transform competence into divinity. An Elven violinist who has played for four hundred years may be magnificent. He is not, however, four times as skilled as one who has played for a hundred, and at some point there are only so many ways to place a finger correctly. Humans frequently find this disappointing. Musicians generally do not.

There is also the matter of attention. A long life does not entail a long period of uninterrupted study. Elves become bored, an observation which has offended several Elven philosophers, all of whom became bored during my lectures on the subject. A person may devote seventy years to botany, then abandon it for architecture, spend a century in public service, withdraw to raise children, develop an interest in poetry, lose interest in poetry, become obsessed with astronomy, and eventually return to botany after discovering that the entire field has changed while he was away. To a Human observer, this individual appears to possess astonishing breadth. To the Elf, he has simply had several careers, and the distinction matters: longevity multiplies opportunities, but it also multiplies opportunities to change one’s mind.

Indeed, extremely long-lived individuals often become less narrowly specialised over time unless their occupation strongly rewards continued concentration. An Elf may begin adulthood as a superb physician and finish life as a competent physician, excellent gardener, passable historian, mediocre painter, and unusually informed amateur astronomer. A Human may look at this and ask why nine centuries failed to produce mastery of all five. The Elf may reasonably ask why anyone would spend nine centuries trying.

Dwarves display the same principle on a shorter scale. Their lives permit far longer professional careers than those of Humans, and the result is often impressive institutional expertise. A Dwarven engineer may spend a century working on bridges and possess intuitive judgement which younger colleagues cannot easily duplicate. Yet even here, accumulated experience eventually encounters diminishing returns. The older engineer may know more failure modes, remember more historical methods, and recognise danger from subtler signs. He may also insist upon techniques which were excellent fifty years ago. Experience is valuable; it is not automatically current.

This becomes especially visible during periods of rapid technological change. Long-lived races are sometimes assumed to possess an automatic advantage in scholarship because their experts remain alive. Sometimes they do. Sometimes the survival of experts means that the same respected individuals remain professionally influential long after the assumptions which made them respected have become obsolete. A Human scientific field may lose an entire generation of senior authorities within several decades and be forced, however reluctantly, to move on. An Elven field can retain the same argument for two hundred years because both men who began it are still attending conferences. Longevity preserves knowledge; it can also preserve nonsense.

Aesir present another variation. Their roughly three-and-a-half-century lives provide ample time for deep specialisation, but traditional Aesir culture often values cumulative practical competence more than abstract diversification. A herder may spend two centuries refining knowledge of animal behaviour, migration, weather, terrain, and clan history without ever acquiring the sort of encyclopedic book learning Human visitors expect from someone of such age. This indicates no lack of capacity. It indicates that intelligence follows incentive. A man who has spent one hundred and eighty winters keeping mammoths alive through storms may know little algebra, and I would hesitate to call him uneducated while standing beside a mammoth in a storm.

The inverse case of Gremlins is perhaps more illuminating. If long life automatically produced superior ability, Gremlins ought to be perpetually disadvantaged. Their lives are short and their childhood brief, with adulthood compressed into perhaps four decades of useful work. Yet Gremlins routinely become excellent machinists, locksmiths, chemists, mechanics, instrument makers, and technicians. They do so partly because they learn quickly and partly because they have little alternative. A Gremlin who wishes to become good at something cannot spend thirty years considering whether to begin.

Their education tends to be intense, practical, and early. Apprenticeship may begin at an age when a Human child is still being reminded to wash properly, and competence develops rapidly because their society expects independence rapidly. None of this means Gremlins learn everything faster, since they do not. It means that the structure of their lives rewards early specialisation. A Gremlin machinist of twenty-five may possess fifteen years of practical experience. A Human of twenty-five possessing the same amount would have had an alarming childhood.

Psychology must therefore be considered alongside lifespan. Different races do not merely possess different quantities of time; they perceive, organise, and value time differently. Humans tend to experience urgency because adulthood is comparatively short, and decisions delayed for twenty years may become decisions never made. Dwarves can afford longer preparation, though their examination traditions paradoxically force several enormously consequential choices into youth. Aesir often plan across generations that remain personally present. Elves can postpone projects for decades without necessarily abandoning them, whereas Gremlins rarely postpone anything they genuinely intend to do. This last tendency has been described as impulsiveness. Sometimes it is. Sometimes a species expecting fifty years of life has simply developed a lower tolerance for committees.

There is also evidence that motivation itself does not remain constant across very long lives. Elves frequently describe periods of intense interest followed by equally intense disengagement. One may study history for sixty years, lose all appetite for it, and return two centuries later with renewed enthusiasm. Human psychologists sometimes classify these shifts as failures of persistence, which is rather like accusing a Human of lacking commitment because he did not spend his entire adulthood playing the game he preferred at twelve. A millennium is long enough for several versions of a person to occupy the same body, and we should not expect all of them to share hobbies.

The most consequential limitation, however, may be cultural rather than individual. Knowledge accumulated by a person is useful only if it remains relevant to the world around him. An Elf born before modern industry may remember pre-industrial medicine firsthand, but this does not automatically make him superior to a Human physician trained in bacteriology, modern surgery, electrical diagnostics, and chemical therapeutics. The Elf possesses more experience; the Human may possess better information. If the Elf has remained professionally active and continued learning, he may possess both, and such individuals are indeed formidable. They are also rarer than popular imagination assumes.

Continual education across centuries requires discipline of a kind few people of any race maintain indefinitely. Most scholars grow comfortable, and some grow lazy. A few become convinced that everything invented after their two-hundredth birthday is unnecessarily complicated. I have met Humans who achieve this condition by forty.

There is another misconception worth disposing of: that an older mind necessarily thinks more slowly because it contains more memories. This is not how minds work. An Elf does not search nine centuries of recollection each time he attempts to remember where he left his spectacles. He forgets where he left them in approximately the same manner as everyone else.

The practical advantage of longevity is therefore subtler than infinite accumulation. Long-lived individuals can acquire unusual depth, repeat mistakes less often if they are attentive, witness consequences unfolding over periods unavailable to shorter-lived observers, and develop judgement through patterns personally experienced rather than merely studied. That last advantage should not be underestimated. A Human economist may read about three financial panics; an elderly Elf may remember them. The Human may still understand them better. But when someone says, “This time is different,” the Elf has the advantage of having heard the sentence before.

Longevity therefore produces neither automatic genius nor universal wisdom. It produces opportunity. What an individual does with that opportunity remains subject to talent, temperament, education, curiosity, memory, circumstance, laziness, fashion, distraction, love, grief, boredom, ambition, and all the other forces that prevent people from becoming what simple arithmetic predicts. This should not surprise us. A Human possesses enough years to become competent at several things and excellent at one or two, and most do not. Giving the same creature ten times as long does not transform him into a different kind of mind. It merely gives him considerably more time in which to decide what kind of mind he wishes to have, which is both less impressive than immortality of knowledge and rather more interesting.
