The Collected Writings of Professor Alistair Veyne

On Steam Carriages

The respiratory effects of urban industrialisation are relevant to this volume. Steam carriages are not. I dislike them, and this is no scientific conclusion: I simply wish the record to show that any machine which combines the noise of a boiler room, the smell of a foundry, and the manoeuvrability of a frightened ox should not be permitted to share narrow streets with pedestrians. Professor Hest owns one, which has not influenced my opinion, though I concede it has strengthened it.
