On Ogre Politeness

Ogres are often described as having no manners. This is false. Their manners are simply calibrated to a society in which the possibility of being struck during a disagreement is considerably less theoretical.

Among several Ogre communities, interrupting another speaker is considered extremely rude, while shouting is not. Direct insults may be tolerated, but touching another person’s food without permission can provoke immediate violence.

A Human diplomat once described this as “an incoherent etiquette.” He had, earlier that evening, demanded that everyone wear particular jackets before dinner. Cultures differ.
